Circa 1973 THIS ITEM HAS A 1 YEAR WARRANTY Explorer II vintage dial Black dial with luminous baton indexes, aperture for the date. Luminous white baton hands, large luminous orange arrow to indicate the diurnal and nocturnal hours on the 24-hour graduated bezel. This model came with the orange arrow which was exclusive for the first and second versions that were launched in the mid 1970s. In the following ones, the arrow was only red. This fact makes this watch a vintage or collectible timepiece. Also, the triangle set at 12 position is wider than the one in the latest models. SPECIAL NOTES This particular watch has been preserved for a long time and it was never worn by the owner. We can called this watch a new but old stock model. It also comes with its original factory sticker on the case back and warranty. This, plus its NEVER WORN condition make this timepiece really desirable and collectible. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer II The Explorer is one of the most easily recognizable of all Rolex models. With its black dial, large luminous triangle marker at 12, and luminous arabic numerals for the other quarters, it is the perfect mixture of a sport and a dress watch. The generally accepted origin of the Explorer is that it was first designed in honor of Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay, who, on May 29, 1953, were the first to reach the summit of Everest wearing Explorers. It was designed for explorers and so it had a high visibility dial, an extra strong case, and, it could be lubricated with a special oil which could withstand temperatures of between -20°C and +40° without changes in its viscosity. There were two distinct variations on the theme and they seem to have been aimed at two distinct markets. The “Air-King" Explorer and the "dress Explorers". The Explorer II was introduced in 1971 as model 1655, and it is essentially a GMT-Master with a fixed bezel. The luminous circle on the seconds hand, was added in the following version. On the third version the extra hour hand was painted in red. The watch was introduced as being especially useful for the speleologist (cave explorer), pilots, air traffic controllers and other civilians, who "soon loses all notion of time”.
